J. Michael Coleman Scholarship
The J. Michael Coleman Scholarship is awarded annually to up to 10 emerging professionals working in commercial real estate to attend the BOMA International Conference & Expo. The scholarship covers registration fees plus $1,000 USD to be used toward other costs (travel, hotel, etc.). Awardees are also invited to an exclusive Future Leaders Networking Reception at the conference.
This scholarship, administered by the BOMA Foundation, is named in honor of J. Michael Coleman, BOMA Fellow, who passed away in 2020. Mike had a successful career in the building security industry, working for more than 30 years as the top commercial real estate expert for AlliedBarton Security (now Allied Universal) before retiring in 2016. His generosity, dedication, and mentorship were hallmarks of his decades-long involvement with BOMA. He served on BOMA International's Executive Committee and the BOMA Foundation Board.
The mission of the J. Michael Coleman Scholarship fund is to support emerging professionals in their careers and in their involvement with BOMA.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Must be a BOMA member and an emerging professional. An emerging professional is defined as an individual working full-time in commercial real estate who has 7 years or less experience in the industry.
- Previous recipients of the scholarship are not eligible.

BOMA/YARDI Innovation in PropTech Scholarship
The BOMA/Yardi Innovation PropTech Scholarship is awarded annually to up to 10 emerging professionals working in commercial real estate who demonstrate a commitment to advancing technology‑driven property operations. Recipients receive complimentary registration to BOMA International’s Annual Conference & Expo, plus $1,000 USD to support travel, lodging, and related expenses.
Eligibility Requirements:
Emerging Professional must be a full‑time commercial real estate professional with seven years or less of industry experience whose role involves managing or operating commercial properties with technology‑driven responsibilities. Roles and responsibilities include but not limited to:
- Managing smart building systems and innovative technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, automated controls, and AI‑enabled predictive maintenance tools.
- Leveraging AI and data analytics platforms to monitor building performance, streamline operations, and reduce repair, energy, and administrative costs.
- Overseeing digital property management tools, automation platforms, and workflow systems that enhance communication, service delivery, and operational efficiency.
- Applying technology‑supported decision‑making tools to evaluate operational risks, support ethical practices, and ensure compliance across building operations and teams.
