The Electrification Equation: Balancing Costs, Capacity, and Compliance
5

Electrification is rapidly changing how commercial properties are designed, operated, and maintained. Whether the push comes from investors, state mandates, or sustainability goals, engineers and property managers are at the forefront of implementation. This panel discussion will explore what electrification means in practice, from evaluating when it makes sense for your building to managing it when it’s required. A diverse group of stakeholders and experts in building operations and energy management will discuss real-world considerations, including system readiness, grid and transformer capacity, coordination with utilities, and unanticipated costs associated with building management system (BMS) upgrades or equipment delays. Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of the technical, operational, and financial implications of electrification, as well as strategies for planning effectively for both new and existing buildings.

Learning Objectives—At the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  • Evaluate the key drivers behind electrification initiatives, including regulatory, financial, and environmental factors, and how they influence decision-making for building owners and managers.
  • Identify the major technical and operational considerations involved in electrifying both new and existing buildings, such as system upgrades, utility coordination, and potential cost and scheduling impacts.
