Battery Energy Storage Systems
7

With state's incentivization of the installation of commercial grade batteries (BESS - Battery Energy Storage Systems), buildings can reduce their peak demand and save money. With growing needs for building resilience, pairing asset BESS with solar systems provides the ability for owners to keep buildings online in the face of brown/black outs creating potential competitive advantage.  While solar is not a requirement, understanding the solutions, incentives, risks, opportunities, including the importance of how energy storage systems are managed, can drive meaningful value.

This session will explore how to take advantage of this opportunity, potential risks, and what other state incentivization programs are available for BESS, solar and other clean tech solutions.

Learninb Objectives—By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Analyze where Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) create the strongest value—across property types, tenant profiles, and geographic markets—and identify the conditions that make projects viable.
  • Evaluate state and federal incentive programs for BESS, solar, and other clean‑tech solutions, and apply them to strengthen project economics.
  • Assess key risks and challenges—including safety considerations, data gaps, underwriting hurdles, and policy uncertainty—and determine strategies to mitigate them.
  • Interpret the business case for BESS and solar by examining ROI drivers such as peak‑demand reduction, resilience benefits, tenant expectations, rent premiums, and potential insurance impacts.
